Most data mining techniques only work on specific type of input data. For example, date and time information must be handled with care and must often be transformed according to different sources and hence time zones. But also without date information, lots of data type transformations need to be performed. Regression schemes like neural networks or support vector machines can only be applied to numerical data. Others require nominal values alone and cannot deal with numbers.
The data analyst has to ensure the correct transformation of the input data before the analysis scheme is applied. The number of possible solutions for these transformations is usually high and only the most experienced analysts directly pick the most promising combinations of preprocessing operators.
