A new data mining challenge has been launched within the e-LICO project.

The challenge is called ECML/PKDD Discovery Challenge 2011: VideoLectures.Net recommender system. The contest consists of two recommender system problem tasks and a side-by workflow contest in which Rapid-I sponsors the best RapidMiner workflow with an free admission to RCOMM 2012 including flight and hotel.

 ECML/PKDD Challenge

The total award of the challenge sums to Euro 5500 - plus the free trip to the RCOMM 2012!

All details on the challenge can be found at

http://www.ecmlpkdd2011.org/challenge.php.

We are looking forward to your RapidMiner workflows.

Good luck!

Great Idea
Maybe Rapid-I could do similar public challenges for Rapidminer with (smaller) prizes. All I learned on mining was through the videos of Neil and Thomas, but unfortunately they seem to be the only ones providing accessible material. Stimulating people to write or record tutorials could help to grow the community further.

There are more challenges!
Hi Peter,

thanks for your thoughts. Rapid-I actually has already published from time to time such challenges. For example, we have sponsored the last e-LICO challenge and we are supporting our partner "Research Garden" who regularly published data analysis challenges. More infor at

http://www.research-garden.de

But you are right: maybe we should really come up with smaller challenges from time to time where we would publish the solution as video after the challenge which might entertaining and educating at the same time. Until then, another option would be our game show "Who wants to be a data miner?" which will be presented during the next RCOMM again. Here, up to three analysts try to find a solution simultaneously in front of an audience and against the clock. Definitely a highlight of the RapidMiner Community Meeting :-)

Cheers,
Ingo
